Hurricane Helene Response

When Hurricane Helene struck Swannanoa, our community faced devastation unlike anything we had seen before. Homes were lost, roads were blocked, and many of our neighbors found themselves without power, water, food, and essential supplies. But in the face of hardship, our community came together with resilience, kindness, and action.

The Swannanoa Community Council (SCC) quickly mobilized alongside Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS) and Friends of the Swannanoa Library (FOTSL) to turn Grovemont Park, the Community Center, and the Historic Grovemont Square into critical relief hubs. These spaces—normally used for recreation and connection—became lifelines, offering food, water, medical assistance, and a place to gather in support of one another.

How We Responded

From the first moments after the storm, volunteers stepped up in incredible ways:

  • Chainsaw & Tree Removal Teams cleared roads and homes, making them accessible again.

  • Medical Assistance & Welfare Checks ensured that our most vulnerable neighbors received the care and supplies they needed.

  • Supply Distribution & Community Meals provided food, water, and essential items, including a large community potluck to share resources before food spoiled.

  • Long-Term Support & Recovery with funds raised through the Swannanoa Community Council, we were enabled to provide financial support to the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry, Bounty & Soul, and the Swannanoa Grassroots Alliance (SGA)—a coalition dedicated to recovery and rebuilding that was formed in the wake of disaster.

Your Support Makes a Difference

Financial contributions made to the SCC during the aftermath of Helene played a crucial role in both immediate relief and will assists in long-term recovery of our beloved community. We know that recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. The road ahead is long, but together, we are not just restoring what was lost—we are building a stronger, more resilient Swannanoa.
